Saturday. Activities are winding down as our time in Greece draws to a
close. We had the whole day free and we chose to visit the beach. Our
destination was Batis beach. "I only like the Batis beaches," said David
Kraus when asked for his thoughts on free day. It took about an hour to
make it to the beach from our apartment, taking advantage of the public
transportation system. It was a clear, sunny day. 80 degrees Fahrenheit
by my estimation. The water of the Mediterranean was a clear blue and
very calm. We enjoyed our time laying on the sand, working on our
sunburns. Brian, a boy our age from the Iranian church, met up with us
on the beach. He wanted to get in the water immediately. We made our way
to the water's edge. The seawater was cold. The shore was covered with
small stones and the slope leading into the water was lined with large
rocks. We dove in. Still cold. It was an invigorating swim.
Most
of us got out of the water at that point. I went to lay on a towel in
order to work on my sunburn a bit more. John Sadler enjoyed a back
massage from Brian. It was nice for everyone to get some relaxation in.
Soccer on the beach |
After
an hour or so of laying out in the sun, I was pretty pleased with my
progress and I got up. A few guys came over from the other side of the
beach to ask if we wanted to play soccer with them. If you didn't know,
the Mac class of 2020 has a reputation for being the most athletic group
of scholars ever to have been enrolled in the program. With this in
mind, we were happy to accept their challenge. It was an intense match.
Several of the pigeons indigenous to that particular section of the
beach suffered soccer ball inflicted injuries. Nevertheless it was a
good time and it was an experience I will always hold on to. Side note:
we sauced them. It was a free day well spent.
